COURSE SUMMARY
This course goes from the very basics of Apple’s FCP X editing software through to advanced editing functions such as Transitions, Sound Mixes, Graphics, Effects, Keying, Compositing & Animation. But the course isn’t just about button pressing, we explore the often ignored craft of ‘editing grammar’. We learn how to edit faster and more creatively by introducing discipline and sorting processes into your workflow. We look at some short cuts and practice some regular challenges that face editors on a daily basis.

WHO’S IT FOR
This course is for anyone from beginner to day to day editors wanting to understand the software better, use it faster and achieve much more. It’s for journalists wanting to become more multi-media capable, corporate producers, documentary makers etc.

OUTCOMES
Delegates will be able to edit and publish complex packages for news, documentaries, corporates and social. They will be able to re-version quickly, record narration, mix complex sound tracks, add text, add graphics, build animation, add effects, use masks and blurs and much much more.


Day 1 Syllabus

User interface and layout
Library, Project Event structure, importing material and media management
Exercise – set up a new project, import material and organise in the event folders
iMovie project integration
The origin, rules and grammar of editing. Sequences and montage.
Working in the timeline (Project), basic tools, track discipline, overlay sequences & personalising the UI
Exercise – begin editing a basic package using the organised footage
Learning to love magnetism, spacers, transitions, basic audio mixing, trimming, split edits

Day 2 Syllabus

Adding text and graphics. Using the Essential Graphics interface – Re-editing and re-versioning.
Re-editing and re-versioning. Best flow and practice. – Assigning roles and project management
More complex audio track switching and audio effects – Colour correction and understanding LUTs
Video effects
Video effects
Composting, layering and masking
Building basic animated graphic reveals
Keyframes and basic animation
Using animated blurs to blur number plates and faces – Export template profiles and process
